Charles Noel was personally offended by the reaction of the membership of the Olympic Club who questioned the lack of transparency in accounting for the money from the Fistic Carnival (Louisville Courier Journal).

The Crescent City Athletic Club

In late October, three weeks after receiving the unanimous acclamation of the Olympic Club membership, Charles Noel and Joseph Sporl unexpectedly resigned from the Olympic Club and organized the Crescent City Athletic Club. Stung by their friends’ accusations of impropriety, they were now determined to take their new club to the prominence of the Olympic Club.69 The news broke while Noel was in New York, ostensibly on Olympic Club business. Even as the local newspapers were reporting on Noel’s possible future matches for the Olympic Club, the major out-of-town papers were reporting that Noel had resigned.70 By mid–November Noel’s resignation and the formation of the Crescent City Athletic Club was news across the country.71
